oh dear wookie and miles, do I lack beer sophistication?

The liquor store near me burned down over the summer, and my previous love of beer has turned into a forced love as far as drinking. Why do I dislike nearly all IPA's I taste? So far Smuttynose IPA, and I'm pretty sure Bluepoint's Hoptical illusion.

Maybe I should try more. For now, gonna give some belgian ales a go, so far the leffe blond ale was delicious, gonna give hoegarden a try.

I still keep Brooklyn Brewery Brown ales/Pennant Ales/Lagers in my fridge on reserve. This will not change for a while.

There's nothing wrong with not liking IPAs. If you want to try a couple similar beers that will give the bitter hops flavor a fair shake, try out the Dogfish Head 90 Min IPA or the Great Divide Old Ruffian Barleywine. If you don't like those beers, you'll never like hops. If you like them, you might only like them in premium beers.

If you like Leffe, there's a huge world of Belgian and Belgian-style beers out there for you to love. Leffe is really about as cheap and bad as Belgian beer gets. For cheaper but good American imitations, look up beer from Ommegang (NY) and Allagash (ME). Also, Unibroue (Canada) puts out amazing Belgian-style beer.

I buy Brooklyn Brown by the case. It's a solid beer. Cheap, malty, and delicious. It's not a premium beer, but it's one of the best "ordinary" beers I've had. I actually haven't tried the Pennant or the Lager.
