Re: \"Official\" High Stakes Poker Season 3 (Week of 1/15)

I think Gabe said Matasows bet with AK was too risky.
What about Alaie holding 55, calling 9k before the flop and with 346 on the flop, not calling a 15k bet. There was already 27k "plus the 15k flop bet" in the pot. Even if Chen has an overpair, Alaie is only a 3-2 dog. The money that was already in there justified some kind of play. Doesn't he have to at least call and take one off. As it turns out, Chen (who had AQ) was probably through with the pot, but results aside.

Yeah IMO Alaei should have raised there and repped 33/44/66 which makes perfect sense. If Chan has an overpair, there is at least some fold equity (depending on which overpair he has). Chen has to know that with an overpair there he is not far ahead of any of Alaei's range and will be quite often crushed. Alaei will still be 35-40% to win when he walks into an overpair, and there is already quite a bit of dead money, plus some fold equity, and there are plenty of times Chen has a big ace that missed.
Maybe Alaei just didn't want to make a high variance play like that for $100k. That's all I can think of honestly.
