I think people are overreacting. Had the person included another gift (the "bottle of wine" type item), then I would not have been angry at all -- a fun little prank with no specific target.
What I'd be angry about is not the fact that the people's elation was smashed, but the fact all he gave was a useless piece fo paper. Not really in the spirit of christmas.
