It just is. I don't mean to be dismissive or to imply that the etiquette is inappropriate or misguided.

The convention is old and (largely) honored, and it's just impolite to ask to see the hand just for information.

If it's your last hand at a casino before you move to a different city, and you bet and the opponent agonizes and folds, it's bad etiquette to reach into the muck to grab his hand and look at it (even though no recourse will really punish you). Just is.
