If you are talking about the Ali-Inoki match, that was essentially a promoted stunt to make money. Neither fighter had any incentive to risk serious injury or loss of status. The outcome of the fight had no effect on the compensation either fighter received, and no significant impact on the furtherance of their careers.
In a no rules fight, a strategy of staying on your back or in crab position would be inferior.
