The definition of species is debatable. According to one definition, two animals are in the same species if they can mate and produce fertile offspring. OConversely, organisms are different species if they can mate, but only produce infertile offspring, or prodcue no offspring at all.

According to that definition, there could be no such things as interspecies mating because if they could mate, they would be part of the same species by definition.
