Re: Whiskey Review and Recommendation Thread
Ooooh.. Whisky. I think I've tried most of the well-known Scottish distilleries [1], if not their full range. I'll just post a few of my favourites and a wee bit of reasoning.
Lagavulin 16 - I'll pick this as my favourite Islay whisky, though Laphroaig and Ardbeg makes killer whisky too. A nice amber colour and a smell that easily puts you in a nostalgic mood if you've ever had some good times around a campfire. The taste is well-rounded, though obviously heavily coloured by peat and smoke. Long, complex aftertaste.
Talisker 10 - Could have been an Islay whisky, but is technically not (don't ask). Peaty, smokey and spiced. Much more polished and rounded than typical Islay whiskys, while still retaining the "smokey edge".
Glenlivet 12-18 - Perhaps my favourite Speyside whisky. Very well rounded. Definite hints of fruit / honey. Smooth sailing. Excellent choice for first time single malt drinkers.
Oban 14 - A highland-whisky that could just as well have been an islay whisky. Aggressive in the smoke and peat department. Delicious stuff.
[1] What, they're making whisky outside of Scotland?
