He can only learn those consequences 1 of 2 ways: learn by experiencing and taking ownership and responsibility in his choices, or 2: robotically following orders. The latter argument neither worked for Calley at My Lai, nor did it work for the Nazis at Nuremberg. It basically boils down to the kind of person you want to raise. A person dependent on orders, or one that can make successful decisions.
