If I were you I'd take out your 2 iron and use 3 different wedges excluding your pitching wedge. One wedge should be a lob wedge (60), the other should be a sandwedge (56-55) and the final should be a gap wedge (51-52). Depending on the hard pan and the amount of green you have to work with a gap wedge can be very helpful for those type of shots.
It sucks that your friend has to angle shoot, but 1.5 inches isn't enough to make any sort of difference. If you are playing for $$$$ calling him out could [censored] up his mental game. He may think it helps him (when it really doesn't) and if he can't do it anymore he might struggle. putting is all mental.
