It's not a heavy piece you can just as easy move it to g4 or h5. Suggesting that it is a standard follow-up without anything to back it up is not very helpful. If Ne4 is standard so is Re6, Qd7 and most other random moves, cause I said so....

And from e4 what are you doing with the knight?

I think it's just a good all-around move. It allows us to play f5 if we so desire, puts some pressure on f2 (and g3) which might be handy, allows us to whip the Queen across to defend, or to attack and has the option to nip into c5 if it wants to to attack the Queen. I'm sure that some of those are currenly redundant, but also that the combination of those 'threats' would be quite handy to have.
