People are saying the tiger has to get close enough to be bitten/pancaked by the hippo, but tigers kill animals by attacking them from behind and biting their necks. I think the tiger will eventually be able to accomplish this on a hippo"

Both lions and tigers hunt this way- but ONLY on smaller prey- the bite to the back of the neck is to break the neck, they are not big/strong enough to break the neck of larger animals this way. When lions hunt prey larger than themselves they have to drag it down and suffocate it. NO way a tiger kills ahippo with one bite to the neck, and if that sucker rolls even a little when trying to suffocate it- nighty night.
