The African Elephant has an estimated life span of 60-70 years in the wild and can live up to 80 years in captivity. They are social animals. The elephant lives in a matriarch society and are very protective of their young. Juvenile or full grown elephants are not considered to have any natural predators; however, their young sometimes fall victim to lions. It has even been documented that when water is very scarce (water holes less than 4 inches deep), a pride of lions will attack and kill a full grown elephant. It is not, however; a common occurance. Elephants generally die as a result of poaching or of old age. Sometimes size does matter. Elephants are the largest land animals and have a gestation period of about 22 months. Males can reach a height of 10 feet and weigh as much as 13,000 pounds.
