Grunch.
Therefore, this is probably the only serious reply.
It's the same reason most people don't know [censored] about Africa, Caribbean Islands and Fiji. Unless you set out to learn specfically about it, the above named places (and many more) did not have a big / direct enough influence on history until relatively recently. Also, it's the same reason the traditional canon of literature consists mostly of "dead white guys."
On the other hand, Europe and America have shaped history extremely powerfully, which is why someone from Iceland probably has a fair amount of knowledge RE: the aforementioned places. --Also the same reason, I suspect, that English is an internationally important language. For good or bad, Europe and, subsequently, America have been the biggest players in the world for quite some time.

very true
I guess the problem most Canadians have with the whole situation is that it seems nearly all Americans say "our country is the most important in the world FCCK YEAH" when virtually none of them have contributed anything to that

Exactly. My country is the most important in the world, and I have contributed nothing to that. Have you contributed anything to Canada's mediocrity?
BTW, I am not a nationalist. I just enjoy poking fun at Canadians' inferiority complexes.
