It's better than then a true hedge, because you still win for any score other than 5, and for 5 exactly, you basically win the 1k! Am I thinking this through incorrectly, or wouldn't this be the obvious way to go? It doesn't seem like you can lose.

It guarantees a win, and has a chance at winning the full grand, but you also lose EV, just like with any hedge. The odds of hitting the middle aren't high enuough to outweigh the extra juice.
