I've always figured the heirarchy goes about like this:

1. Well-balanced omnivorous diet.
2. Well-balanced vegetarian diet.
3. Poorly-balanced vegetarian diet.
4. Well-balanced vegan diet.
5. Poorly-balanced omnivorous diet.
5. Poorly-balanced vegan diet.

I'm no vegan sympathizer, but I think you can pretty easily switch 3 and 4.

agreed, a well balanced ANY diet, is probably better than a poorly balanced diet.

BTW, vegans get all the nutrition they need from plant sources, except for B-12, which must be supplemented.
