I get similarly annoyed when waitstaff at high-end restaurants act this way towards people to whom this is obviously a big extravagance and quite likely a special occassion.

few things make me want to hurt people, and this is definitely one of them.

Agreed, I have not been nearly rude enough to people who have treated me this way. I find I generally get it from older waiters. Younger people are more in tune with the idea of middle-income or working class people who save money on clothes and eat good instead.
I ran good last month and bought Ms. Thumb a nice purse that she was eyeing while we were out shopping. Probably not expensive by nice purse standards but it was a few hundred more than she would ever spend on one so she was impressed, and kept asking me in the checkout line if I was sure I wanted to get it for her. The sales girl made some remark like, "Now you know what it's like to be a baller and buy nice stuff for your girlfriend," and I just said, "Funny, I don't feel any different than before."
What I really should have said was, "If I did the same for you I could probably show you how it feels to get pumped in the cornshoot and dropped off at the bus station over a chintzy purse like the B&T trash you obviously are."
