I wouldn't put krupa or rich in the top 10 for jazz.

in general I would never put a big band drummer in the top ten for jazz. The nature of a Big Band vs a Small Combo group helps hide a weaker drummer in a big band where he'd get exposed big time in a combo

So Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were "weak"?

rich, no, krupa, kinda sorta. Krupa was someone who could only really play in a big band style and had problems the few times he tried to play bop. His was a style that was geared only towards his band and essentially playing loud. Krupa charts were never really all that demanding either, I highly doubt that he could play well in Kenton's band which was a lot more sophistocated then anything the krupa bands did. Any of the guys who generally also played in teh short lived Eckstein band were much better as that was a very inovative band. I wouldn't even come close to rating Krupa anywhere near Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, or Tony Williams
