As for the original joke, it's funny because Republicans/current administration won't admit anything's wrong and whenever someone criticizes of something they label them an unpatriotic freedom-hating liberal. That's why it's funny.

In fairness, his explanation almost had me convinced. That is of course, until I remember this joke is terribly unfunny.
