Old English != Middle English. Beowulf = OE. Canterbury Tales = ME. OE is, like, totally incomprehensible. First 8 lines of Beowulf:
"Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,
