Cos thats the rule and the defenders know that, its not like its some shock to them, the french guy was an idiot the guy wasnt facing the goal, he should have stayed on his feet and not stood on the his leg right in fornt of the ref.

And that's fair? It's the rule, so that's the way it is, so that makes it fair? Nice logic. And it's not just the one in this game. It's just something I've noticed as I've watched this World Cup. It's hard to stay interested in a sport when a foul that has little to no chance of creating a goal gives the other team a close to automatic goal.

this has been sais 3563465563 times around here: penalty kicks exist to keep clear in defenders minds that making a foul in that area of the field is a terrible idea. This increases scoring and generaly makes games more exciting (since players get more space in a dangerous zone).
