I'm torn on this.

Part of me says that if somebody kept [censored] around and bumping into me, I'd be really tempted to push back. I think [censored] like what you guys were doing is just extra douchebag stuff. Respect other people's space, ESPECIALLY in a crowded train. Grow the [censored] you.

Clearly their response was out of line, but man, it's just so hard to get outraged at them when you just don't see what you did wrong.
