Why don't they write a computer program in [censored] basic or whatever that computer runs on to automatically enter the numbers every 108 minutes?

The reason is likely because the numbers only needed to be pressed post-incident. Then again, perhaps there needed to be human presence in the station and the button was there to keep people around.
