Eko found a dead body with his brother's cross around it's neck. The body was in a plane, which itself obscured a very important location on the island. It's possible that the plane was placed there after the monster gleaned information from Eko.

I was gonna say "That's ridiculous" to that, but I guess nothing is with that show. I just think it's highly unlikely, and not many things are highly unlikely on that show.
