I'm not exactly sure how the whole backing business works, but it's not the same as what the OP is talking about. Let's say my normal hourly rate is $200. In the OP's situation, if I sit down for 4 hours, I know that I will be able to buy a new 60gb iPod when I get off my chair. With backing, I'm not sure exactly at what point you split the profits, but I'm assuming if you breakeven for a month, you're not getting a new iPod.
