While Ethan, Gale, and Goodwin might not have been original Dharma employees, I don't see much reason to think they were just strandees being blackmailed into working for The Others. I mean, Ethan was working in the medical hatch in Claire's flashbacks, and Goodwin seemed to know an awful lot about The Others and spoke as if he was one of them.
