I interpret that as introverts being overwhelmed by too much information in large groups of people because they are internally wired. It's like information overload. But it should really be the case whether you know the people or not - it's just the big group thing period. If it's based on whether or not you already know them, then that sounds like a social thing - which is where the shyness comes in.
I guess the test would be how comfortable are you walking up to a stranger and starting a conversation?
