Re: X-seed 4000
Savage! That would be seriously awesome. But how could it get planning permission? Won't the shadow be a problem?

Re: WOW, PETA people really are crazy!
[ QUOTE ]
This distinction is already being blurred by the creation of human-animal hybrids (more) (more).

I think there's a need to distinguish this from truly human chimerae, who...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
For sure. Really my whole interest in this concerns the possible genetic basis at root of the phenomenon. The only reason I've used the term 'gayness' so broadly is that unless we want to speculate...

Re: Random Question About Genetic Traits
Do yourself a favour and never mention your profession in discussion if it's just something to lend a whiff of authority to your unsubstantiated claims. What you end up saying is that at least your...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
[ QUOTE ]
I thought a genetic trait could self-select as long as it did not hinder the host.
[/ QUOTE ]
It surely can, which is why this specific topic is particularly interesting to me. I...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?

Some things may not serve a clear, obvious evolutionary purpose yet still evolve, I'd imagine.

Absolutely - which is precisely what makes these discussios interesting to...

Re: Random Question About Genetic Traits

Well, I "got" it from years of studying paleoanthropology in college and teaching genetics and evolutionary theory. Where do your ideas come from?

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
[ QUOTE ]
Why can't sexuality be both genetic and social (i.e. nature and nurture)?
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, ultimately everything is a combination of both, since a gene can generally only find...

Re: Random Question About Genetic Traits
I don't see this reflected in apes. Ants, yes. Vertebrates tend to invest far more in one batch or litter (to varying degrees) - primates more than most vetebrates, and humans more than any other...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
As I said in the OP, I find this unsatisfying as an explanation. I can see how an excess of hormones/whatever might make a male less likely to reproduce - I don't see how it could result in gayness....

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
[ QUOTE ]
In polygyny it is plausible that women could be lesbian and not be any less reproductively successful.

Again, don't see how this could be so, unless we insist either that...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
OK slow down. Please don't put words in my mouth.
I have not said that gay is 'the opposite' of hetero.
I have not said that gayness is unfit - I have said I do not see how it can be.
As to...

Re: How can gayness have a genetic basis?
Anticipated in OP, to be honest. What I'm talking about is small tendencies, over evolutionary time-scales, will magnify effects in the genome. Suppose that gayness renders a male only 5% less likely...

It actually would work that the homosexuals would get a long better in the polygynous society because they are less sexually frustrated.
