2/4 casino hold\'em
 

A few weeks ago I was playing 2-4 hold'em at an Indian casino in Michigan. Early in the day I was at a table that was really tight and most of the players were locals and knew each other. I normally play pretty tight myself and held my own making about $16 in two hours or so. I moved to a table with more action and slowly started losing my stack. As the night wore on the tables got looser and looser as people drank and by 11:00 there was no less than 5 or 6 players seeing nearly every flop. I was playing quite tight, as I'm sure I should, against such a loose table. By 2:00 I had lost $240. It really upset me because I really felt like I was playing solid cards. I've read Skalnsky's "Theory of Poker" 3 times but am fairly sure it doesn't totally apply to such small stakes, and I adjust for that. My question is, is there anyone out there that can consistantly win at such wildly loose tables? Should I adjust my game and keep trying or should I just play during the day when the games are tighter?? Is it more profitable to play with tight, more expierienced, predictable players and just grind it out; or is it possible to make money with a table full of lunatics? I just got Sklansky's small stakes hold'em book in the mail today, but I suspect I'll be back at the table before I get a chance to get through that book. Any advice?

Read the book. It's infinitely more profitable to play at a table with a bunch of drunks.

Well, the looser the game, the higher the varience. Other than that, the looser the game the more profitable.

Read "Small Stakes Hold'em", by Ed Miller. (I'm on my 5th reading and still finding things)

That said, there is something else that can happen in very loose games, so much is happening that some people lose their focus and don't know it. It's the same thing as playing when you're tired, or on tilt.

Read SSHE before you go back. Preferably the whole thing a couple times, but at least the preflop chapters if you're heading back soon. You need to see more flops and raise more preflop to really take advantage of their bad play.

And be very sure you understand the reasons behind what you read. You are not raising to get them to fold, you are raising because your equity is greater than theirs and as such you are making money everytime you do so.

I see all the time "I don't even bother raising, noone folds anyways". You are correct they don't.. but your raise wins you money in the longrun, and you can limp with non-raising hands and get great value with them in 8, 9, 10 handed pots.

Nothing better than AA capped pre-flop 8 ways. And if you don't understand why that is... read some more.
