What\'s a good $$ donation for a wedding gift?

Some of my good friends are getting married in two months. I'm the best man. Their wedding invitation says they're registered on a couple sites, but they'd prefer a monetary donation to be used towards a pottery kiln. They're huuuuuuge pottery people. So obviously I want to donate to that. What's reasonable/expected?

Completely depends on your financial situation. There really is no standard for these things.

Why don't you find out how much the kiln costs, then make your decision?

What were you going to get them from where they are registered?

Get them one of those money envelopes and cut out a window over the President's picture and sandwhich a hundred between a couple of ones, that's always fun.

As above, very dependant on your financial situation. If you make, say, $35,000, I'd say $100 is sufficient. If you make $65,000+ or whatever, $200+. If you're making six figs+ adjust accordingly...

depends on the general financial situation of others, too. i went to a wedding with some young friends - they got married while still in grad school. most everyone there is a student and is kinda broke. i got them a some nice knives (they weren't registered anywhere) - spent like 100 bucks and it was twice the price of anything else our friends got them. felt a little weird.

A pretty good rule of thumb, especially if bringing someone, is how much would you spend on a nice date? Give at least that, unless the wedding is the equivalent of a kegger.

Generally the gift should approximately equal the amount per head of each wedding guest. If it's a super nice wedding (not absurdly super nice), then $100-250 per person (you and gf, or whatever).

If it was me by myself, I'd say $150 min, and I'd probably do $250.
