I\'ve got a \"Poker\"
I've been living in Ireland since August, and play about 3 nights a week in the local cardrooms. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the term "poker" being used instead of "quads" or "four of a kind"..
I don't know if its just an Irish thing or what. First time I heard it I didn't know what the player was talking about. I thought he said "I have pocket __" Obviously I've gotten used to the term since then (although I still announce quads).. but does anyone know where this term came from? Is it used at all in the US? I'd never heard the term used to mean four of a kind prior to playing here. |
Re: I\'ve got a \"Poker\"
The term is used all over europe. Come to think of it, in Austria where I play I have never heard any player using a different term.

Re: I\'ve got a \"Poker\"
Since you have been gone the terminology has changed in the US too. Now when you make quads you say, "I've got a hard-on." Then smile at everyone nearby.

I saw this somewhere, maybe on a website for a Spanish casino -- since someone already said it's prevelant across Europe i guess that's not a very interesting data point.

Re: I\'ve got a \"Poker\"
This is from back in the day when 4 of a kind was the best hand you could get (before straight flushes were a part of the game).
