If $$ is no object Pebble Beach is the best. Pelican Hill (or Bay, can't remember) in Newport Beach is also very nice.

The public course I want to play there is Rustic Canyon in Moorpark. It is a newer one and is meant to be an intelligent, natural design. If I get to LA I will make a point to play it. The golf architecture writer (and architect) Geoff Shackelford teamed with Gil Hanse on the design. Shackelford knows a hell of a lot about architecture and has studied the LA courses, Riviera in particular, extensively. If nobody invites me to LACC or Riviera, the course I want to play the most in LA is Rustic Canyon.

It really doesn't get any better than Pebble, Spyglass and The Links at Spanish Bay.

Check it out here

I don't think Monterey qualifies as southern california.

Am I missing something or isn't Pebble Beach about 300 miles from LA?

TDouble, have you actually played those courses? If not, what makes you confident they are the best that's available? If so, how could you not realize they're nowhere near southern California?
