What's even more confusing was the two people dressed as animals, screwing in the hotel near the end. My screenwriting professor explained both of these things to our class but i've long since forgot.

The hotel itself is the ghost, spirit, evil entity what have you. What it really wanted was Danny and his power, but Danny was able to resist it so the hotel got to his dad who was a much easier target and tried to get Danny through him.

Essentially the end of the movie shows how Jack's spirit (remember he freezes to death in the maze) has been trapped by the hotel and is now and forever a part of it.

That being said, the book was infinitely better.

It's a bear giving head to an unregistered guest, man. Seriously, don't make too much out of it. It's only surface-deep.

I respectfully disagree, but part of it is that I suck at visualizing things (it's really hard for a book to scare me). In fact, it's one of the few movies I like more than the book.

Another factor could be that I saw the movie first, so that's what I was expecting with the book and it didn't deliver.

I don't disagree with you, the movie has its own merits and limiations, I just never got past the fact of how quickly Jack went nuts in the movie. Books, having the advantage of not having to get a story told in two hours can go into more character development.

The movie did have some pretty chilling moments.
