The airlines fought to change the deadline to january 23rd so holiday travel didnt get messed up. But im going to get 1 tommorrow anyhow to be on the safe side.

While you wont need it to get on the plane/reenter the US - you will need a passport, or original birth certificate + drivers license to set foot on Bahamian soil as a US citizen.
Two separate and distinct issues.

dunno if you guys saw this in the FAQ but http://travel.state.gov/passport/get...first_831.html for expedited passport service... $60, get it in 2 weeks
