Word on the street is that it is breakeven .... another approach would be just to buyin short and play like it is a MTT or STT kind of thing

both approaches can be profitable, but demand a loose table (and perhaps also aggressive, sitting on a maniacs right and limp reraising is a nice little mechanism when playing short)and those are no longer easy to come by.

Do a search for myturn2raise, he has several hundred thousand of hands playing a short stack under his belt and has often shared his experiences with the rest of us. But basically unless you are clearing a bonus or have a good rakeback deal and simply settling for this, shortstacking is not all it is cracked up to be at least with regards to NL Hold'em.

The prolem with lower limits is too high rake (and it really hurts if you are allin often and dont win huge 200BB pots). The problem with higher limits is that this strategy really sucks.
If you want to play good shortstack strategy you need to improve it a lot (mainly in stealing/defending the blinds department).

is this thread refering to a chapter in Getting Started in Hold Em? I haven't read that book but I thought the short stack stuff in NLHETAP was very good.

I find in Small Stakes Cash Games I often get Dead Money/an overlay to make up for the rake.

Another book that has great stuff about short stack play is Rolf Slotboom's PLO book. This is for a different game of course.
