All in post flop with big overpair

I am a novice at no limit. I played limit until party shut us out. I see a lot of responses to posts, suggesting that you should shove all-in with a big overpair after the flop. Could some explain the rationale behind this.

My guess is that you do this to stop from being drawn out on, and that you may get called by a smaller overpair. I'd appreciate anyone's feedback.

ask questions about specific hands, general questions like this suck. mostly we go all in because we have the best hand and like money
