Blind defense.....

Here is a common situation where I find myself being too weak, but I don't know what else to do...

Villain is 32/26/2.8 after 165 hands.

Villain raise in CO, SB folds, I call in the BB with A3o.

Flop is Q74r.

I check, Villain bets, I fold.....

yeah I do the same usually. I might peel one and see what he does on the turn if I think he sucks postflop.

pf 3bet is big time spew IMO. that 3 is a big piece o [censored]

FYP. Ignore the chip spewers who responded to you so far in this thread, since when is A high 3 off suit kicker the nuts? You should be making a lot of money off of TAGS who play like that, A3o in the BB is a weak hand vs the average CO raisers range but worthy of a call in the BB against a CO raiser who might be stealing. Decide what to do next on the flop.

Also consider how aggressive he is, do you really want to get caught in a trap on the flop?

Yeah 3betting that preflop puts you into all kinds of ugly situations postflop - I would never do it. Most of the time I would play this hand the same.

I used to play it the way you do. Now I am peeling more against blind stealers, because there are so many K-high and J-high hands that you are ahead of:

You are getting 4.5:1, so continuing isn't too unreasonable. I tend to fold if I don't have a good read on the villain's tendencies on the turn, but I am peeling more and more often these days if I know them well. I am definitely folding flops with 2 broadway cards though.

I remember reading something recently where some prominent posters advocated a more passive line against stealers with small offsuit aces from the BB (I think in MHSH), but I can't find it right now. I think 3-betting A3o OOP preflop is probably a losing play unless CO can be pushed off hands easily.

Are you replying to me? I never discussed the flop in my post. But yes I can peel the flop here as well quite often, but only if I am up against an opponent who doesn't fire a second barrel that often on the turn, this is a good move against weak opponents.

Re: Blind defense.....

Sorry, no I wasn't replying to you, I meant to reply to the OP. I realize that with A3 you will make some incorrect folds on the turn, as well as the fact that it has RIO if an Ace hits, so I don't mind folding the flop even though our equity shows that you can peel. I agree with your point about peeling against people who don't fire a second barrel. I'm not sure I would feel too happy firing a second barrel at this flop with a lot of my unpaired hands on this dry board if I was the villain actually unless I felt that OP peels way too light, but maybe this just means I should fire second barrels more.
