3/6 optional 12

My local Casino (Isle of Capri in Booneville, MO) recently introduced a 3/6 with optional 12 dollar river bet or raise game. I'm sure its full of the usual lonely old men calling stations. Any thoughts on strategy adjustments for someone used to playing regular old 3/6 no fold em?

Could you explain the rules a bit more? Optional 12 dollar river bet? Whose option?

It certainly sounds like a more profitable game for the better than average players in it.

Anyone and everyone's option. Just like limit hold em, except you can opt to make any river bet or raise that you make 12 dollars.

Oh okay. Yeah, that would definately be more profitable for the better players in the game over the long-term. Could get stung in the short-term of course...

I think this kind of game would be fun to play in. It's a bit more like no-limit, if only at the river. You could make NL moves like the 'post-oak bluff', etc.

But against the usual 3/6 live casino players I think the main strategy changes should be to value bet for 12 dollars more often, and to 'pay off' less for 12 dollars. Also, the 12 dollar bluff would be good against some players.

I would think that your basic strategy shouldn't change, you just have to factor in the $12 river bets/raises when calculating your implied odds on draws. And of course factor that into your reverse implied odds when you're holding a borderline made hand on a drawy board or drawing at a low flush or non-nut straight in a multiway pot.

Basically, just understand that you're going to make up twice as many BBs when you hit on the river as you would in a normal 3/6 game, but that you can also lose twice as many when you river your way into a hand over hand situation. Maybe you could justify trying the odd river bluff in a HU pot if you think the other guy is playing scared.

Whoa! I didn't even think of calculating altered implied and reverse implied odds in these games. Yeah, that'd be really important.

value bet the river less often when checked to. Play more drawing hands.

Would you mind explaining the theory behind this?
