Anyone ever installed a punching bag?

So, my friend just gave me a 65 lb punching bag that he doesn't use anymore. I want to hang it in my garage, but I don't know what I should exactly install onto. I can crawl up into the attic space, so reinforcing a joist or something wouldn't be a huge problem. But, I don't really feel like getting bit by a black widow either. Anyone have any experience? Thanks in advance for any help.

Luck,

Run a chain over a 2x4 and use a lock. Lay a thick towel between the chain and 2x4 to prevent it from digging into the wood.

If you have a basement, I recommend installing it there, as the joists are exposed (usually anyway). If not, Sports Authority and the like sell mounting kits for them with instructions.

What he said, but use a carbiner(climbing thingy). I'm installing one today also. I would suggest some place like a patio with good flow of fresh air.

I used to have a similar sized punching bag. I installed it in 2 different apts. with no problems. I simply took a good sized (3/8" should be plenty) eye hook and screwed it through the sheetrock into the ceiling joist. The ceiling joist is 1-1/2" thick, so you must make sure it is centered. Find the outside edges of the ceiling joists using finish nails. If the finish nail drives very easy, your at the edge. The finish nail holes are easily patched as is the eye bolt hole.

I prefer using a stud finder to banging nails in random spots.

Hang it on a solid piece of wood and it'll be fine.
