I'm thinking of going to Hawaii for a week or so for a vaca. Any suggestions on where to stay, what to do, etc?

It's awesome. We rented a car and drove to the top of this volcano. Beautiful views and a cool experience driving above the cloud layers. You literally drive through a cloud and pop out above them. Pretty surreal to be looking down on the clouds as you are driving. |

Go to Nanakuli/Waianae area and try not to get your ass kicked. That's always an adrenaline rush.
Edit: On Oahu. |

Check out Polynesian Cultural Center ,the show at the end of the day was awesome.
Forgot to add the USS Arizona Memorial. Also a helicoptor ride around the Island is cool. You can also take an island hopper plane for about 75 bucks (may have gone up) to any of the other islands. These are both on Oahu island. |

Maui rocks.

I thought it was a good time, but I guess you do need to like learning about other cultures.

Kauai is gorgeous, and you can drive around the entire island for a day, go hiking on the na pali coast for a day, and find other terribly interesting activities to do. If you're more of a beach person, the beaches there are fantastic.
Maui is a close 2nd, and Oahu 3rd in terms of the islands I've been to. |
Re: Where To Go In Hawaii?
I have been to Oahu, Maui and the big island.
For my money it's the big island all the way, which simply rocks. We rented this amazing house on the Kona side. It's gorgeous, there's tons of stuff including visitng the volcanos and black and green sand beaches. We were there for a week and it was nowhere near close enough. I so very much want to go back sometime. I'm not a big fan of Oahu/Honolulu. Waikiki is too crowded. That's not to say there aren't some good things. North Shore and Haunama Bay are nice and Pearl Harbor is a good visit. We always have to spend a day on Oahu because my wife was born there and we have to do the family history stuff which I do genuinely enjoy but there's mot that much else to appeal to me. My parents liked the Polynesian Cultural Center but I haven't been there. Maui is very nice. Granted the area up through Lahaina and Kaanapali are kind of touristy but still okay. Hana is cool and I understand the volcano is good (can't remember the name). Haven't been there but I've heard only good things about Kauai as long as you are able to self entertain and relax. I hear it's gorgeous. |
