Who gets extra chip in split pot?

If a pot is split between two people and there is an extra chip that can't be split, who gets it? I always thought it was the person closest to the button (aka: the person in latest position). Is this correct?

It's not exactly "the one closest to the button" It's "whoever is first to act." sometimes confusion arises.

In hi-low games the high hand gets it.

In other games the one to the left of the button gets it.

On some online sites it seems to be random. For example, on UB sometimes there is a weird split, even if the pot can be split evenly.

This is my answer as well. I've also seen it going to the highest card, usually by suit ranking. (A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] gets it over the A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] in a chop)

In holdem, the player in earliest position gets it. BigBiceps is right about it going to the hi hand in a high low game. In a game like stud high, I don't know what happens because it comes up so rarely. I had it happen to me once in a stud game in a casino (we both had the same pair with the same three kickers) and the dealer had to call the floor to figure it out (which seemed like more trouble than it is worth for one chip).

The thing that annoys me about this, is that if you are the raiser and someone "sucks out" and ties you, you may lose that extra 1/2 bet. I mean really, let's say you raise w/ pocket aces on the button and the board is A-K-Q-J-10, should the SB get the extra bet when he holds 9-4, just because he's in earlier position? At least in a casino they give it to the higher card.

In our home game, it's rock, paper, scissors - best 2 of 3.
