80\'s Adolescent Angst Films (Choices for today?)

Okay, for NYE I am drinking Grey Goose Bloody Mary's, and will later go out to play some LL donk O8.

Before I get too drunk, however, I'd like to ask about today's equivalent for the 80's teenage angst films.

I was going through hell in the early to mid 80's. I found films like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink a method of coping and keeping myself from suicide.

I forgot how good some of John Hughes films were.

Sixteen Candles 1984
The Breakfast Club 1985
Pretty in Pink 1986
Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986
Some Kind of Wonderful 1987

So what is the equivalant for today's teens? I admit, I just don't watch movies like I used to. Do today's teens have these kind of great "over the hump of hell" films to get them through adolescence? Napoleon Dynamite?

Anyone, anyone? Bueller?

Mean Girls is actually pretty good, I would definitely recommend it over Napoleon Dynamite. ND is more of a wannabe-hip metagenre movie than a true teen angst flick. And anyway, it's just a third-rate Rushmore ripoff.

Ghost World is also good although it doesn't really fit that 80's template and is a bit more serious.

Clueless was really big a while ago and is the go-to movie for teenage girls on how to talk in lots of California.

I agree that Mean Girls is a fun watch.

John Hughes really was a great natural talent for those kinds of movies. It's funny how he was everywhere then disappeared -- I wonder if he died soon after or something.

At 1989, Say Anything was really excellent. Hugely recommended if you haven't seen it. Barely qualifies as an 80's film and isn't the ensemble kind of thing Hughes specialized in, but stil a great teen/young people movie.

John is still a giant in his profession. He went to those little kid films not long after. See the link I posted (Home Alone, Beethoven, Vacation, Curly Sue, etc).

I have Say Anything, too, the newest release. Excellent.
