New Yorkers: Help me with my trip to the city--Hotels etc.
 

The first week in July my gf is flying up from Texas for 7 days to stay with me in Connecticut. I have a day off and we are going to NYC for a day, I have reservations at Nobu Restaurant and would like our hotel to be somewhat close, just so that after we travel around all day and get cleaned up to go eat we can know that it will be a nice easy walk/ride to the restaurant.

Price isn't too much of a concern, it isn't as if we are staying for a month...only one night and we would like to stay somewhere pretty nice. We know our way around the city pretty well but we aren't from the city, there is a big difference. We don't know the best hotels for the best price etc. Here are two hotels that we thought about so far:

Hotel 57

70 Park Ave Hotel

Any thoughts on these places, does it even matter? There are a ton of places to stay, any recommendations or thoughts?

My second question is about lunch. We aren't going to NYC to do the tourist thing, been there done that, we go to the city to get good food and hang out away from Connecticut, which sucks. So I am looking for a nice place to eat around Central Park area, doesn't matter what kind of food, doesn't need to be expensive or nice...I like hole in the wall places that are small as well. Just need some direction on some good food for lunch.

I don't know anything about NY, as I just moved here and I hate it, but I'll definitely buy you and your lady friend a drink.

Oh yeah, my one recommendation, there's a little lunch place in the 80's on Madison called Le Pan Quotidien or something like that, I went there once and it was good. It's not too far from where you're thinking of staying. They have all these cute little open faced sandwiches and [censored], I bet girls would like it.

The Central Park area is huge, but if you happen to be near the corner of 71st and Broadway, Gray's Papaya is right there. Awesome hot dogs and papaya juice.

This is going to sound super-gay, but the top floor of the western half of Bergdorf Goodman has a cafe/restaurant with pretty awesome views of the park. There are also options in the Time Warner building, but they are all very pricey.

As for hotels closer to Nobu (Tribeca), check out:

60 Thompson
Mercer Hotel
Tribeca Grand
SoHo Grand

They're all pretty popular places to hang out. I've never set foot in any of their hotel rooms, though.

The Tribeca Grand is probably the nicest hotel that's an easy walk from Nobu. It's only about six blocks or so. The hotel has a pretty nice bar (by nice, I mean it's a fancy lounge with plenty of beautiful people and expensive drinks). The only negative is that the rooms are a little small, but most hotels in NY have that problem.

Edited to add that Le Pan Quotidien is a good recommendation for lunch around the park.

This is correct, unless you're eating at Nobu 57, which is a possibility considering the hotels you mentioned.

Out of those listed above, I recommend the Soho Grand, although I've heard good things about 60 Thompson.
