How scary is this river?

Preflop: Hero is CO with Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. 5 folds, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls. Turn: (4.25 BB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players) BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls. River: (6.25 BB) T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players) BB checks, Hero ??? BB is 33/9.7/1.3 Do we throw out one more bet here, or check behind? For a not-overly-agressive villain to come out betting the flop I'm figuring he likely made top pair, and really don't like the look of the river card. It's pretty obvious though from my posting this that I didn't bet and that I was ahead - this time. Is there usually any value in betting in this spot? |
Re: How scary is this river?
It is almost entirely read specific. How often have you seen villian lead with 2nd pair or draws? If I had seen him do it I would be the river, if I had never seen him do it I would check behind.

Re: How scary is this river?
This is such a typical situation for me, and I really want to hear what others have to say here. In this situation, I typically check behind and many times I feel I'm losing value by doing so.

Re: How scary is this river?
Bet it. You will be called by worse hands than QQ here.
I should add to this a bit. From a steal position raise, not-overly-aggressive players tend to call down with hands that you beat here. If you had raised from UTG I'd rethink betting here. |

Re: How scary is this river?
Just as an aside(because I'm curious) would your position influence this decision at all, say raising here UTG?

[/ QUOTE ] I may have more respect for his flop bet if I'd raised in early position, but with the betting going the same way to the river I can't see this being much different. Tell me why that's the wrong answer |

Fair enough.

I bet here. He hasnt shown enough aggression to convince me he had top pair. If he three bet the flop or bet out on the turn I may put him on the T. However, he bet the flop and immediately backed down to check-call mode from there, making second pair a strong possibility. Furthermore, HU I would bet out a lot on a junk flop like this, with any pair or none. I think assuming his flop bet means top pair is a mistake. |
