If you don\'t go broke playing a set...

With the exception of a four to the flush board, I've been following the maxim, "If you don't go broke playing a set you're not playing it right." Is this best practice?

When I look at my PT numbers, I see I win about 70 percent of the time with "3 of a kind" but, of course, it doesn't separate sets from trips so I think, when sets are isolated, it would always be +EV over time to play them to the hilt. Is this what you guys do too? Am I being too siimple minded on the issue?

There are certain spots to lay down a set, but they are few and far inbetween.

I come from a NL background, but I'd say I wouldn't mind going broke playing a set anytime, but I want to get to the point where I can feel that I'm beaten and make a correct fold. There are certainly very obvious situations that a set cannot beat whatever is being represented (four flush, four straight), and you should fold accordingly. However, I think for low stakes, playing a set to the end every time will be +EV.

The only maxim in poker should be that following poker maxims is a sure sign of weakness

I'll be honest, Ive never heard that maxim and until recently I would have disagreed with it. But maybe Ive becopme more enlightened over the last few days.

I used to not only not go broke with a set, I actually made money with a set.... gasp. But over the last 2 days I have been going broke with a set far more often then not. I guess Im improving.

Oh yeah, when the board is 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] and you bet with A:diamond A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] and get called and the turn is a 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] and villain no raises this is an automatic 3 bet and then when he caps check-raise-cap the river. You have TOP SET!
