German translation from \'Hostel\' sought (SPOILERS, probably)

Don't know if the movie Hostel has been discussed on OOT before, but I enjoyed it a lot.

During the scene when the hero is getting tortured by the nazi freak with the chainsaw, he earns a brief respite by saying something to the torturer in german.

I just bought the dvd, and the director makes a point about the absence of translation, saying that he won't subtitle it on purpose in an effort to "preserve the mystery" of the movie, etc. While I respect that artisitc choice, I'm still really curious. Anyone happen to know what the kid says in German?

It would be real tough to post a phoenetic re-production. I was hoping someone on OOT happened to have seen the movie and knows German (longshot, I know), but if no one has, I think my father, who I'm seeing tomorrow, might be able to rough out a translation.

if you select subtitles on the DVD, maybe it will show the text in German for that scene

Nope. Like I said, the director made a point of excluding the translation entirely.

So in a german version of the movie does he say something in some other language?

When Paxton is in the slaughterhouse with the German, he delivers a speech in German. In essence, he is saying, "You don't want to kill me, you'll regret it all your life, you will hear my screams every night in your nightmares, please don't kill me."

I found that in the trivia section on IMDB. Too bad it didnt work and the guard put some kind of gag on him...

I thought this little tidbit in the SPOILER section was very interesting too...

The trailers bill the movie as "inspired by true events". Director Eli Roth says that he found a Thai website that advertised itself as a "murder vacation," offering users the chance to torture and kill someone for the price of $10,000. Roth later showed the site to Quentin Tarantino and the two developed the idea for the film. Tarantino and Roth said later on an Icelandic talk show that they have no idea if the website was real or not.

This movie was aweful...talk about crappy horror.
Ok concept...but terrible execution.
Eli Roth is a hack...he makes Michael Bay look like the next Kubrick.

Christ, you couldn't figure out that was the gist of what he was saying???? I don't speak a word of German, but this was patently obvious to me.

If the director wanted to keep it a secret, he shouldn't have had the kid wimpering and pleading, and the tormentor acting profoundly disturbed.

EDIT: BTW, I watched the first half of "Ichi the Killer" tonight. Got bored with it halfway through. But the violence in the first half was far more graphic than anything from "Hostel". Since "Hostel" had absolutely nothing to offer except graphic torture, and since you seemed to like it, you might want to check out "Ichi".

I have a friend who is a creative director in the advertising business who shot a commercial in Vietnam last year. He met a guy in Phenom Phen (spelling?) who offered to let him shoot an AK47 for a small fee. The guy took him into the jungle for some target practice, they were shooting away, and then he offered to let them try an RPG as well. They were like "hell yeah", and had a blast. As they were shooting the guy told them for a fee (I think it was somewhere around 10K) he would let them torture and kill someone with no penalties from the police.

Obviously they turned down the offer.

I hated it too, but not because of the gore. I just thought it was boring as hell. Nothing happened for the whole first half of the movie. At one point I actually forgot I was watching a horror movie.

Re: German translation from \'Hostel\' sought (SPOILERS, probably)

I actually liked the movie, but I can see where it did go wrong in some places. I felt like the first 45 minutes was a reason for some TandA (not that there is anything wrong), and pointless character development.

I also hated the scene where the one friend dies and it is that guy they met on the train and he goes into a speech about why he is doing it...I hate that in movies where the "bad guy" has to explain his reasons.

I thought it was entertaining and a fun movie..I loved the kids in the movie and the scene talking to the guy who is about to do it was great as well. I didn't think it was that gory or brutal of a movie except for the eye part.

I agree, it isn't half as bad as Ichi.

I disliked this move as well. If you have a choice, take option B.

just watched this and hohum. the thing that makes me sick is you know this type of thing happens somewhere in the world, either now or in the past.
