The rankings are a bit hit and miss cuz there is no structure or formula to it....but i heard that they are working on a new way to rank tournament players, they just don't want it to become about who has made the biggest score recently like tournament reporter or something.

Tournament ranking lists are silly, but cool to oggle over nonetheless.
Their criteria seems to be weird sometimes, but either way, Gobbo deserves to be up there (and ranked even higher). |

[/ QUOTE ] Nah, the criteria seems to be fairly consistent/standard. Whoever does the most self-promoting usually gets on the list. Unless, of course, there are enough fanboys promoting for you so there is no need for self-promotion. They use a tool called the fanboymeter to gauge how high certain players should be ranked. Fairly scientific if you ask me. Congrats though gobbo, you should be a bit higher considering i haven't heard of a good amt of these ppl toward the bottom of the list. |

Also, don't take the rankings too seriously as a gauge of skill or whatever. The rankings are meant to be a reflection of recent (maybe last year or so, with much more emphasis on the last 2-3 months) performance in 11r+ and 100f+ tournaments on the major sites (Dise, UB, Stars, Party, with a little attention paid to FTP and Bodog). I actually think they do a pretty good job following the action, although everything could always be improved. I don't think they say anywhere that the rankings denote the best players, as it's clear that a good portion of the list would be flat-out wrong if they were trying to rank overall poker skill. |

I lurk from time-to-time in the forums there, but then a strategy post comes along and I see how many of the "top ranked" players have no grasp of basic tournament/poker strategy, etc. Pretty sad...

i still can't get over how awful that thread was. i was tempted to reply 20 times, but everything had already been repeated multiple times and it wasn't going to help, so i refrained...i would have just been frustrated in the end anyway |

[/ QUOTE ] I agree, there's a fair amount said on P5s that is pretty bad in terms of poker theory, tournament play, etc. And yea, from the "top ranked" players sometimes too (I don't agree with the placement of a number of players in the rankings, but overall, I do think they do a pretty good job of following all the action). But once again, knowing or not knowing the correct play won't stop everyone from putting up some good results in tournaments. I mean, look at Tuan Le's results. |

re: rankings... they already have a list of tournaments on their schedule that i assume they primarily look at in ranking players. why not just track TLB points (or some similar stars-like TLB forumla) from those tournaments and use that for to determine rankings? seems to be easy enough. you could do a rotating year or something along those lines... |

For the most part, anyone who is fearless about risking their stack, and has at least a little discipline and poker knowledge can win a tournament. Online it is even worse, b/c the stack sizes negate a lot of the skill advantage after the 1st hour anyway |
