Lack of known pros left in the WPT championship

In a tournament that is highly respected and played up as one of the tournaments pros are supposed to excell in, I am surprised at the lack of name pros on the leaderboard at this point.

James Van Alstyne - $4,235,000
Roland De Wolfe - $3,325,000
Carlos Zambrano - $2,985,000
Victor Ramdin - $2,685,000
Joseph Bartholdi - $2,350,000
Paul Wasicka - $2,245,000
Erica Schoenberg - $1,735,000
Simon Moussa - $1,695,000
Vanessa Rousso - $1,575,000
Cliff Josephy - $1,255,000
David Matthew- $1,200,000
Espen Saltnes - $1,130,000
Claus Nielson - $940,000
Gary Maresh - $905,000
Valentino Morella - $525,000
Chad Brown - $485,000
Patrik Antonius - $450,000
Men The Master Nguyen - $375,000
Surinder Sunar - $120,000

I've heard of James Van Alstyne, Victor Ramdin, Chad Brown, Patrik Antonius, Men The Master Nguyen, and Surinder Sunar, and some of those names, only in passing.

Well, the top notch pros all bombed out yesterday so we are left with the donks.

Re: Lack of known pros left in the WPT championship

Yup, Doyle, Deeb, Hellmuth, Chan, Baxter, Hoff busted out yesterday.

I have no clue who these people are, except for Antonius and Sunar.

Re: Lack of known pros left in the WPT championship

The "pros" were donks before they got lucky. When one of these donks win, they will be on magazine covers, write books and articles, do interviews. This "donk" will become a "pro" before you know it. In six months time, you will have forgotten that he is really a donk. All it takes is one TV appearance.

Men the Master is also arguably the most comprehensively discredited of all the well-known players in the game today.

He survived the alleged "tournament chips found in the hotel suite" incident, only because the game had so little media exposure at the time that it occured.

I have no doubt that if such an incident were to occur today, the player involved would be banned for life from all tournament play.

Re: Lack of known pros left in the WPT championship

I recognized about 1/2 the names at a glance, which seems about right for a tournament.
Just because they don't have a big TV appearance yet doesn't mean they aren't a known pro, after all.

Re: Lack of known pros left in the WPT championship

Yeah, I don't know what happened yesterday. Deeb, Hellmuth, Chan, David Williams, and Evelyn Ng all at the top of the board yesterday, and they all blew it.

Men the Master was Cardplayer PoY last year, so he's obviously a big name that everyone should know. Does anyone think he is cheating now? But in any case, he doesn't have enough chips to make the final table no matter how good he is.

Just out of curiousity was this the only record of his cheating in some way or were there other incidents in the past? If so, what where they?

He's widely suspected of using chip-dumping teams. I'm not sure what hard evidence there is if any, but it's pretty accepted that he has done so.

Somewhere deep in the RGP archives Negreanu called out MtM, if you search for it, I am sure you could find it.

From the link:
Daniel Negreanu;

"n 98', after I won a bracelet and had some money, both Men and I
put Nhut Tran into a limit hold'em event, each putting up half the
money. Down to three tables, Men had a moster stack, while Nhut only
had 4 small bets left. Men raised in 1st position, and everyone
folded to Nhut. Who then re-raised it to three bets. When the bet
came back to Men, he had to call one small bet, as well as one more
small bet to get Nhut all-in...he FOLDED! That alone is a cardinal
sin by any competent player, that should have been punished, but
wasn't. "

There is a difference between an "accomplished" pro and a "known" pro. Most of the people on that list have been to a TV final table once. The only "known" pros left (Q rating wise) are Men and maybe Chad Brown.

Former Blackjack pro Erica Schoenberg already has two TV poker appearances (GSN's Young Bloods and Young Bloods II, both invitationals) and she already has an endorsement contract with Mansion Poker (those ads run on FSN during Speed Poker on Sunday nights.)

Why?

28 years old. Bleach blond. Babyface.

--

Vanessa Rousso has also appeared on TV before, having been invited to play in on Episode 1 of "Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker".

She too has already hired an agent and is looking for an endorsement contract (look for the likes of Bodog to pick her up if she were to make the WPT Final Table.)

--

The online poker rooms are on the prowl for a photogenic female to replace Evelyn Ng, who hasn't done anything in a while after finishing 2nd at WPT Ladies Night 1. PokerStars dropped Ng about a month ago. Ng has been picked up by Bodog.

Just because they aren't FSN Who*es doesn't mean they aren't "known". Everyone who is a "known pro" sure as hell knows those names, and anyone who has followed poker for more than a year should as well.

I'm curious about your use of the word "lack". I don't know about you, but it makes me very happy to hear that the love is being spread around a bit, rather than always floating up to those top .1% aholes.

Cliff Josephy got all in pre-flop against Claus Nielsen. The players showed:

yeah i find this unwarranted celebrity bs. the kournikova effect is huge in the poker world. since they are a small number of female poker players combined with a slight amount of attractiveness compounds their popularity. I mean friggin' Erin Ness has a contract with Pokerstars. If Kathy Liebert were hot, just imagine the $hit that would be going into her mouth. She could finally STFU for once.

2 $1,903,950
3 $1,025,205
4 $659,120
5 $439,375
