Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
I think TDS is more consistently funny -- e.g. pretty much money in the bank on any given night -- but when TCR is *on*, it's heads and shoulders better.
Flame away. |
Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
I think TCR sorta gets old. I agree that looking at one show it might be funnier. But how he talks and acts sorta gets old.

Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
I think Colbert Report is funnier. But the show does seem very formulaic. I miss the Even Stevphen segments on The Daily Show.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree with this whole heartedly. Colbert is either funny as hell or just flat. Gold or iron. I like the Colbet Report better than the Daily Show but I also think that the Daily show is in decline. |
Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
The Colbert Repoir sucks. Colbert is only funny when he has 5 minute segments on The Daily Show like he use to. Give him a half hour, and his suckiness is revealed.
|
Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
Colbert Report is funnier. Better segments ("on notice," "threatdown," "i called it," "the word," etc.) and farr farrrr better interviews. I usually watch the first 2/3 of the daily show, then switch to sportscenter for 10 minutes while Jon interviews whoever, then back for all of Colbert.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree and I'm a huge Daily show fan. When I saw the first episode of TCR, I was sure there was no way it had any legs. Seemed like SNL skit trying to be a movie-just not enough material. I was wrong. Colbert's act never seems to get old. I only wish he could get better guests. Some are outstanding, but some shouldn't even get interviewed on public access television. This will seem like an odd choice, but the guest I've liked the most was Dermot Mulroney. He seemed to really get it. |

He was [censored] great on TDS. I only watched the first few Colbert Reports and didn't think it was that great for a full half hour, haven't really watched it since. It was definitely a bummer because I was expecting good things.

Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
The Colbert report is funnier.
Then again, I don't find JS funny all the time. In particular, I don't like his little high-pitched whining that he likes to do during his monologue. I also think he tends to botch his interviews. Sometimes just by making jokes that bomb, and sometimes by kissing ass too much. I do like his interviews that get hard-hitting though. I think Colbert is a better comedic tallent. I also tend to prefer his interviews, which are faster-paced and often put the guest in silly situations. Some of the skits that he does, such as debating himself, are no good though. |
Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
I was actually just thinking of this and discussed it with a friend. I do feel the Colbert Report has surpassed The Daily Show. He's just a funny guy. His style could get old quick though, I don't watch it every day.

[/ QUOTE ] I tend to agree, however, I think Colbert's interviews are generally significantly better than Stewart's. That being said, I wish they didn't feel compelled to have a guest every show. I realise it eats a lot of time that's probably a lot easier to write, still, I'd rather they were both more picky about their guests and only had people on when it's really warranted. Maybe 2-3 guests a week, each. |

Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
I think the news coverage on the daily show is stronger, but the colbert interviews are way better than the daily show. I'm extremely impressed with the colbert report in general.

As Kataffy said, Colbert is at his best when he is interviewing. Whether it's the guest or the representative from 'better know a district' his interviews are gold.
OTOH, TDS's interviews suck, but I still think their 'bits' are way better |

The DS show gets first dibs on guests and most material. If it were to get cancelled and the CR got the best material from the DS, everything would be peachy.

Jon Stewart grinding his ax against bush gets old. The Daily Show used to be alot funnier when they made fun of non-political stuff as well.

Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
Re: the interviews -- Jon Stewart has a reputation to protect and thus has to kiss some serious guest ass.
But because Colbert is essentially doing a 'schtick' the entire time (that of an over-the-top Sean Hannity-uberRepublican), he has more license to challenge his guests and essentially act like a d:ck, because it all feeds into his 'bit.' That's why he can be more candid (in my opinion...which counts more now, since i just entered 'poo-bah' territory) |

IMO, TDS is overtaken by any show on TV, even Simple Life, and the Soup.
I would respect the Daily Show much more if they changed the title to "George Bush + America sucks", because at least they would be straightforward. |

[/ QUOTE ] The part that cracks me up about this is that Colbert is really making more fun of Bush and the Republicans than the DS. The Daily Show still does the best job of calling out politicians both Democrats and Republicans. You say something that condradicts what you said before and DS has the clip. Plus I love This Week in God. Colbert started off weak and has become much better. The Word has become something you have to watch every night. Sometimes the schtick goes over the top on me. I hate his interviews. They were funny when they were a guy who liked to collect body lint, when it is a nobel prize winner things get a little out of hand. But it does crack me up when he cheers for himself when he goes over to do the interview, then I turn it off. |

Re: Has the Colbert Report overtaken The Daily Show?? Discuss.
Colbert is now the better show.
It wasnt for the first 2 weeks of its run though. Also, there are a very large number of running gags that many wouldnt get if they didnt watch quite regularily. |

Bush is just easy to criticize. Not as easy to come up with funny jokes. |

I used to love the show. Then it changed. Go back and watch some shows from ca. 2000 and compare them to now. If you don't realize it is a Bush-bashing machine, then you need to step back and re-evaluate. The show was much better years ago when it didn't take itself so seriously. |

I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] both shows, that is all.
I do agree that the Daily Show suffered from the loss of Colbert though. |
