Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Situation:
You share an apartment/house/whatever with one roommate. You are not good friends and did not know each other prior to living together; this is probably the case for a lot of the younger college kids here. You each have stuff in a communal fridge and cabinets. Everything is of moderately low value, some examples of such items include, but are not limited to: milk, ketchup, leftover pizza, eggs, peanut butter, bread, popcorn, etc. Basically, I want to be clear that I'm not referring to something like a steak or lobster that costs a lot of money. Your roommate eats something of yours without asking. Assume that this is not the "last" of it, i.e. finishing a catron of milk or eating the only remaining egg in teh fridge. Also assume that this is not a chronic "problem", your roommate does not just wait for you to buy food and then eat it, they just happened to want something that you had in there. How do you feel about this? |
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
If you vote "not okay" in this poll I think you're effing retarded and shouldn't be allowed to live with people.

So what exactly did you steal from your roommate?

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Evan,
Hi, I'm a retard and shouldn't be allowed to live with people. |
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Once my roommate ate my schnitzel. With karate I kicked his ass.

Evan, Hi, I'm a retard and shouldn't be allowed to live with people. [/ QUOTE ] I should clarify, you're really only retarded if you think it's okay for you to live with people. Otherwise you're just weird. |

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
If something like this just happens once/or on occasion, I don't care at all, but I can see why people might worry the first time it happens that it might become a problem in the future.

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Evan,
my point is, life is too short to get all up in arms over something this insignificant. I've had plenty of roommates, and we've done stuff like this many times. It really isn't a big deal. It all evens out in the end. |
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Evan,
to me this depends on a couple of things, in no particular order: 1) the level of obviousness that it's my [censored]. did you grab my heath bar ice cream when you meant to get your chocolate? no big deal. took my tropicana homestyle OJ when you drink florida natural grovestand? BFD. but if you take half of my leftover pepperoni pizza when your ass had chipotle last night, there's some 'splainin to do. 2) The acknowledgement of the event. if I come in and preemptively hear "hey dude sorry I ran out of milk this morning so I ganked some of yours" then it is totally cool. or if even after the fact he's like "yeah, I thought that starbucks mocha thing was mine, I'll pick you up one extra later" then whatever. but if it's like "your what?" or "no that was mine" then I'm slightly peeved. 3) motivation from recent events: do they always have a glass of milk in the morning, or needed some for their cereal, and ran out? ok. But, did we just have some talk about cleaning up or some [censored] and now my guacamole which my roommate usually never eats is missing? it's on like donkey kong. Etc. I usually never get worked up about it at all - mi casa es su casa - but it can depend. |

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
ilk, ketchup, leftover pizza, eggs, peanut butter, bread, popcorn, etc.
I think leftover pizza is in a different category to the rest. In general though, this is fine, the person I share a kitchen with and I do this all the time. |
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
i grab my roommate's food sometimes, a glass of juice or soda, a few crackers, maybe a granola bar. then i go to a grocery store, buy a whole package and tell her she should feel free to eat those.
|
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
this is not a problem if you decide what is acceptable before you move in together. I have always done this with new roomates, even if they were a friend before.
|
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
I voted not okay, but it's certainly not a big deal. If he told me after the fact, "Hey, I used a couple of your eggs. I hope it's not a problem," I would be perfectly OK. If he never said anything about it, then I'd be a little perturbed, and I'd be watching for him taking more food.

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
this year I shared a fridge with a stranger. At first we were unsure, but asked when needed. After a month there was free sharing. But we get along very well.

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
This obviously depends on the situation and how often it happens. if you occasionally eat a slice of the guy's pizza, or drink a glass of his milk it should be fine. On the other hand, if you are always eating his food to the point where you barely ever buy food of your own, then this is a problem.

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
My roommate does this from time to time, and always throws me a few bucks. It only irritates me if its late and I can't get more (we're out here in teh boondocks). Then I'll pee on his bed or something, and he gets the idea.

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
i just had a thought. how would the reaction be to me buying her the exact brand of milk that is in the fridge now, putting that next to her milk and writing her name on it? she would feel kinda stupid, i would have compensated her and the problems would be solved, no?

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
Actually I was thinking you should drink all her milk then give her different milk with her name on it...but yours works too...
or you could make a nightly cream depository to said milk. |

Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
If nothing is ever said about the food, I regard him with suspicion and begin to be on the lookout for more thievery.
If he says something, then its fine. |
Re: Follow up to PITTM\'s roommate problem thread
This is all baby stuff. I onced lived in a house with seven people for two years and one of them was a fruitarian. One fridge. How did it work? You didn't eat other peoples food.

[ QUOTE ] fruitarian [/ QUOTE ] Wtf? Is that a real thing? How can you only eat fruit? That sounds like the least healthy diet ever. [/ QUOTE ] Well, we were living in the tropics, so there was a heck of a lot of fruit to choose from. But he was skinny and anemic-looking. And his hair fell out. And he became a jehova witness. So I don't think it's a good idea. |
