45BB/100 followed by a trip to jail!

If you asked me yesterday, I wouldn't have been able to tell you the last time I played B&M. I came home from work and found that my cable connection wasn't working so I headed to the local casino at about 6pm to play 3/6 before meeting up with my friends for a few drinks.

I was running as hot as I ever have. I was flopping monster after monster and got paid off for 3 hours solid. I left at approx. 9:15 after winning $330 (55BB). It was so exhilirating. For the ~3 hr. stretch at the casino, I drank 5 or 6 beers.

After driving home and meeting up with my friends, we went out to one of the local bars. I left the bars at approx. 12am after having 3 more beers, and on my way home ran into a sobriety check. It wasn't long before I found myself under arrest for DWI and handcuffed in the back of a police van to some guy I've never met.

Before any of you recommend AA, I typically drink just a few times a month and rarely have more than a few beers because I usually end up driving my drunken friends home. I have never been arrested, nor had any close calls in the past. I'm not trying to excuse my irresponsible behavior, just feel like I should tell the whole story.

Anyway, after sitting at the jail for almost an hour, one of the guards tells me that I have a $500 dollar bond that I need to pay before I can leave and offers me a list of bondsman to help me get out. If it weren't for the earlier poker session, I would've been stuck there for god knows how long. I hadn't emptied my pockets yet from the earlier session and had the cash on me. What sweet irony it was!

For the record I would like to admit that I should probably not have been behind the wheel, but I was one of those idiots who thought it would just never happen to me. I just so happened to refuse to take the breathalizer, so I don't even know if I was over the .08 legal limit. I bet it was pretty close, but I'd heard several times that it's better to not blow from a legal standpoint, who knows?

My favorite part of the whole story was that the battery on my cell phone was dying on my way out of the bar. I shut it off to conserve the battery. After turning it on after bailing myself out, I discovered a message from one of my other friends warning me about the location of the checkpoint. I'm still a little too made about this to think it's funny, but I'm sure I'll laugh about it someday.

I hope everybody enjoyed my story in the I'm glad it wasn't me way. I hope that someone can learn from my mistake. Take a cab, get a ride, or just drink responsibly please. It's not worth it. I'm a such a [censored] idiot.

Heh, it is not better to refuse and you just doubled your license suspension and got yourself an automatic "guilty" in the eyes of the law. Enjoy!

edit: you'll probably just get mandatory diversion though.

i think you had a decent shot at blowing under .08. It was a mistake to refuse the breathalyzer.

I'm glad you learned your lesson the non-fatal way. I lost a good buddy to a drunk driving accident (he was not the one drinking). Please take the time to let all your friends acquantainces know how bad you screwed up, etc (like you're doing here). Props for admitting your mistake, a lot of people would try to blow it off and be in denial for it and it takes a mature man to own up to it. Drunk driving puts a lot of people at risk, not just yourself.

I lost a gf to a drink driving accident because the [censored] that was behind the wheel couldn't be bothered to walk the 1 and a half miles home and had to drive.

Drink drivers ought to be insta-perma-banned from driving for 5 years - those that actually end up taking someones life ought to be locked away for about 30 years or so.

I'm still bitter and twisted that the drunk [censored] from my story walked away with a paltry fine.

i made a long post saying pretty much the same thing, but i'm a pussy so i deleted it. but the cliff notes version was: clayton, you are a judgmental douchebag and are the type of person that I detest. everyone makes mistakes and he was probably borderline DWI. it's not like he was wasted

it's also possible that some people drive more carefully when they are slightly drunk for fear of getting pulled over. i know this is true in my case. there have been two instances in my life where i might or might not have been over the legal limit but the fear that i might have been kept me driving <5 mph over the speed limit, whereas i drive like an idiot when i'm sober. but i guess by clayton's logic, those 2 instances make me worthy of death and everyone who seems me should spit on me. just some food for thought

I completely agree Josh. Actually I just drove home borderline DWI and to a lot of people this sounds stupid, but I would definitely say that I drive better after having a couple drinks because I am so fearful of getting pulled over and losing my license. Hi Josh,

You are a very bright kid and I rarely disagree with you on these boards. You do not deserve to be killed. Your post does not make sense though. Driving slower and in a way that you perceive as more cautiously will not make up for the impairment in you reaction time and judgement that can occur at close to the legal limit. I think as a respected leader of this forum you really need to rethink this line.

Next time you swing through southern cali I would be happy to take you to work with me and introduce you to lots of people who thought they were driving cautiously or that the person who hit them was.

Bliiip try again surfdoc your post is the one that's wrong. Josh is trying to quantify his impaired driving skills when drinking at or slightly above the legal limit with increased attention and focus. Doesn't this neccesarily imply that his driving skills would be at a level below those of a normally careless drink driver or perhaps the averaged drink driving skill level given that government agencies no doubt combine drinking effects on ones motor skills as well as probably bumping up the effect some by assuming drivers are arrogant, over zealous etc.

So many pots calling the kettle black here.

Re: 45BB/100 followed by a trip to jail!

it's hard to say because i really have no concept of what's what level. i was just making a point that people make mistakes and that there's a huge difference between someone who's wasted and someone who had a couple of beers in an hour or two. obviously if the law is a certain level, then it's unsafe above that level. fine. but if someone makes an error in judgment and has 1 drink too many, it's a little ridiculous to say that they should burn in hell. in hs i was the kid that wouldnt get drunk at a party because i knew my friends would be willing to drive home, so it's not like i think it's an ok thing to do. but people make mistakes. i'm not justifying what the guy did. my whole point was just that clayton is a douchebag. by saying he detests people like the OP, he's saying he detests probably 80-90% of the population

yeah the point was that instead of driving 90 in a 55 or 60 in a 35 like i usually would, i'd be driving 5 mph over. driving that fast can hinder someone's reaction time more than driving .01 above the legal limit

This is just flat-out M.A.D.D. propaganda. The legal DWI limit is very low on the scale of drunkeness. I'm not going to bother to find them now (you can if you want), but there have been numerous studies that show driving while talking on cell phone or driving while tired is much more dangerous than driving with BAC of .08. The truly dangerous drunk drivers are the ones driving around at .25 or .30, not the people who drive after four or five beers.

Josh, obviously it's a question of degree, yeah. But just because there's a huge difference between someone who is wasted and someone who is only a little drunk doesn't mean the latter is OK.

To those of you saying driving using a cell phone is dangerous therefore driving in another state which is dangerous is alright, that's a ridiculous argument. Incidentally, it's illegal to use a cell phone while driving in the UK and I think this should be the case everywhere.
